APM5 Interface Mezzanine Card

The APM5 is an off-the-shelf product designed as a mezzanine card that interfaces with the AP5000 class of products. Like the AP5014A, the APM5 is fully qualified and tested meeting, among other standards, MIL-STD 1275A (28V power), and MIL-STD 461D (EMI).

Although the AP5000 SSPC can fully operate without any additional hardware, the APM5 does provide the following capabilities in addition to the rich feature set of the AP5000:

  • Power module that provides several voltage rails to the AP5000
    • MIL-STD 1275 28 Volt DC regulated output capable of supplying 500 milliamps (max)
    • 5 Volt DC
  • Two more host I/F options:
    • MIL-STD 1553B data bus
    • UART interface for software download into the AP5000
    • USB interface capability (used today for test purposes only)
  • Discrete Inputs and discrete outputs (level and power converter between 3.3V logic and 28V)
    • Eight (8) Gnd/open outputs with sink current of 500 milliamps (max)
    • Twelve (12) 28 Volt/Open Inputs
When to use the off-the-shelf APM5 or a custom designed APM mezzanine card?

If MIL-1553 interface and the other functions that are supported by the APM5 are required by your system, it is a perfect companion to the AP5014A SSPC. If on the other hand, these are not required by your system, AKA's Advanced Solution Group can design any custom mezzanine card for you that will implement exactly what you need. At the minimum, this mezzanine card can be a small and simple board providing only the essential functions. This board can be quite small (compared to the AP5014A) and will connect to the SSPC with the same connector. The most basic functions on this new custom APM card are:

  1. Provide the 28V_AUX @ 0.4A(with MIL-1275 protection or without)
  2. Provide DC to DC from 28V to 5V @1.2A
  3. Optional RS-232 transceivers for the UART on the AP5014A that is pulled to the mezzanine card connector on the AP5014A
This custom board can be very simple and designed with 2 or 4 PCB layers only.

MIL-STD 1275 consideration

The MIL-1275 for the 28V_AUX that is supplied to the AP5000 is taken care by the APM5 mezzanine card. Any custom APM that AKA's Advances Solution Group will design for your system will have to implement MIL-STD 1275 on the APM if that is a requirement. The AP5014A SSPC implements the MIL-1275 on the main 28V (the high current inputs).

Single board custom solutions

AKA's Advanced Solutions Group can customize the design by incorporating the functionality of both custom boards (the AP5000 SSPC, and the APM mezzanine card) in a single board in a custom form factor to meet your needs. Since the AP5000 design implements the MIL-STD 1275 for the 28V high current channel inputs, to simplify the design and be fully MIL-STD 1275 compliant, it could be enough to take the 28V_AUX from the same point as the 28V channel inputs.
